When the students of East High return from vacation, they're in for a surprise when school jock Troy (Zac Efron) and the new school brain Gabriella (Vanessa Anne Hudgens) audition and get the lead roles in the high school musical. Kelsi (Olesya Rulin) is the musical genius who also plays cupid to Troy and Gabriella. Kelsi quickly befriends newbie Gabriella and the two become best friends. Sharpay (Ashley Tisdale) and her twin brother Ryan (Lucas Grabeel) who thought that they were a shoe-in for the leads are vexed and they provide some delightful comic relief. In a school where group clicks define how one should act, Troy and Gabriella decide to jump out of their box by doing something unexpected and different. Soon the Jocks, Brainiacs, Thespians, and "Skater Dudes" begin to break down the barriers of their own groups to establish individual identities.
